The security area at Hamburg Airport reopened on Friday, two hours after it was evacuated due to a "police incident."

Security controls have reopened, a spokeswoman told dpa. "We are returning to normal operations."

Police said the incident occurred when a man accidentally entered the security area.

As it could not be ruled out that the man may have left dangerous objects in the area, police evacuated it completely and searched the premises.

All passengers were required to leave the area beyond the security checkpoints. Passengers who were already on board aircraft also had to disembark.

A dpa reporter at the airport in northern Germany reported that delays of three hours were being shown for all flights after the incident began.

The German Armed Forces are currently conducting training at Hamburg Airport.

Six Tornado fighter jets have been stationed at the civilian airport, which is named after former chancellor Helmut Schmidt, since the start of the week.

The aircraft are practising daytime take-offs and landings alongside normal flight operations.
