Two people were killed and two others seriously injured after a car drove into a crowd in the eastern German city of Leipzig on Monday, reported Xinhua, quoting local media.

Leipzig Mayor Burkhard Jung told Leipziger Volkszeitung that two people had died in the incident. The suspected driver has been apprehended, and there is no longer any immediate threat to public safety.

Two of the injured were in critical condition and received emergency treatment at the scene before being transported to nearby hospitals, Leipzig Fire Director Axel Schuh said, adding that a total of 20 people were affected.

Jung said further details would be clarified through police investigations.
