Severe flooding caused by heavy rainfall has brought widespread destruction to the Greek island of Lemnos in the northern Aegean Sea, local authorities said on Sunday, reported Xinhua.

Floodwaters damaged homes, shops and vital infrastructure, leaving many roads impassable and disrupting daily life on the island, which lies in northeastern Greece, according to Greek national broadcaster ERT.

The mayor has requested that Lemnos be placed under a state of civil protection emergency to speed up recovery.

The worst-hit areas include the island's capital, Myrina, as well as Nea Koutali and Atsiki, which had already been under emergency status following earlier floods. Authorities have also requested that Moudros be included.

Water supply systems were seriously affected, with drinking water declared unsafe in some areas. Damage to rural roads has prevented farmers and livestock breeders from accessing their fields and animals.

Cleanup crews were operating in Agia Triada, where three schools were damaged and will remain closed, with online classes planned.

A government team is expected to visit the island to assess the damage and coordinate assistance, as residents work to recover from the disaster.
