A clear majority of Germans see US President Donald Trump as a threat to Germany, a survey found on Sunday, reported dpa.

The poll was carried out by the INSA institute and was commissioned by the mass-circulation Bild newspaper.

While 24% of respondents said they see Trump as an ally, an overwhelming 61% labelled the US president a threat to the country.

There was no response from 15% of those polled in the representative survey of around 1,000 respondents.

The survey also found that Germans want Chancellor Friedrich Merz's government to take a harder line with Washington, with 52% advocating a firmer approach and 31% seeing cooperation as the correct path.

The poll was conducted on Thursday and Friday amid high tensions between Europe and the United States over the Greenland dispute.

Trump has since withdrawn his threat to impose tariffs on eight European countries, including Germany over his demand for US control of the Danish-administered Arctic territory.
