German police on Wednesday disabled a World War II hand grenade after it was found by a pupil on the premises of a school in Bavaria.

Ordnance disposal experts defused the US-made explosive device in a nearby forest, a police spokesman said.

Shortly afterwards, restrictions around the area where the grenade was found were lifted.

The secondary school in Bayreuth, some 200 kilometres north of Munich, was evacuated following the discovery.

It is not uncommon for unexploded World War II ordnance to be discovered in Germany, even more than 80 years after the end of the war.
