Man shot by police after axe attack on car in Germany

Police in south-western Germany fatally shot a man after he attacked a car with an axe while a child was inside, authorities said on Wednesday, reported dpa.

The man, 64, had smashed the car's window but allowed the mother and child to escape unharmed, local authorities said in a statement.

When police arrived in the town of Hilzingen, near Konstanz, the man confronted officers with the axe, slightly injuring a policewoman.

In response, officers fired multiple shots, fatally wounding the man, authorities said, adding that attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful and he died at the scene.

An investigation has been launched into the incident.
