Two people died and at least two others were seriously injured when a bridge under construction collapsed on Wednesday in the Dutch province of Gelderland, reported Xinhua.

The bridge collapsed over the Twente Canal in Lochem, a town in the eastern part of the country, on Wednesday morning and left people trapped under the rubble, a regional safety office in Gelderland said.

A group of workers were assembling the new bridge when one of its arches broke loose, according to Dutch media reports. The Dutch Labor Inspectorate is to investigate the accident.

Firefighters, paramedics and police officers responded to the scene shortly after the incident was reported. The two injured were taken to hospital and were reportedly out of danger.
