Efforts to root out and remove serving police officers in the United Kingdom who seek to abuse their position of power must be redoubled, a critical report by lawmakers warned Friday, reported Xinhua.
The Home Affairs Committee of the House of Commons also said the recruitment, vetting and misconduct procedures need to be overhauled to ensure cops are fit to serve.
Lawmakers on the committee published their report after investigating policing, calling on the 43 police forces across the country to transform workforce culture.
"Without public trust and confidence in the police, attempts to prevent and detect crime will be unlikely to succeed," the report concluded.
UK's biggest force, London's Metropolitan Police, remains a particular concern and must be shown to demonstrate real institutional change, the report found.
