Ten people were injured, two seriously, early Wednesday after a shooting at a disco-pub in the city of Taranto in southern Italy sparked by a scuffle among university students, reported Xinhua.

A police spokesman who spoke to Xinhua said some details were being held under wraps while an investigation is being carried out. But the spokesman did confirm that four women and six men, all aged 20 to 28, were injured after one person at the Yachting Club Porticciolo di San Vito Disco-pub started shooting a pistol he had in a pocket. The shooting reportedly took place after an argument among the estimated 300 university students on the premises, though the official would not release more details.

Media reports say police apprehended a 37-year-old suspect in connection with the shooting, though no further information was revealed.

Some of the students were injured by the gunshots and some during the rush for the exits that ensued after the shots, which took place around 2 a.m. local time on Wednesday. Of those who were injured, two remained under observation after surgery in the emergency room of the Santissima Annunziata Hospital in Taranto, a city on the heel of Italy's boot-shaped peninsula. Three were released soon after being admitted and the remaining five were being treated for mild injuries.

The police said the authorities were reviewing video surveillance footage to find out more about how the situation escalated.

According to reports, the Yachting Club Porticciolo di San Vito Disco-pub, traditionally popular with tourists, had in recent months become a gathering spot for local youths and students from nearby universities, which include two campuses for the University of Bari.

The police said the authorities would issue a statement about Wednesday's shooting after their investigation is completed.
