Danish police arrested much more suspects at its southern border with Germany in 2019 compared with previous years, according to figures released by the National Police on Thursday.
The figures showed that from October 2018 to October 2019, Danish police charged 3,100 suspects, while the number of the charged at the same border for the previous three years was 3,700.
According to the police, a greater focus on regular crimes and better working conditions have contributed to the significant increase.
"I think we have shifted our focus from a symbolic policy by having a presence at the border, to actively using it for combating crime and doing a proper piece of police work," said Thomas Andresen, Mayor of Aabenraa, a large Danish city port north of the Danish-German border.
