Number of employed persons rises in August

The number of employed persons aged 15 to 74 was 2,628,000 (margin of error ±32,000) in August, which was 34,000 more than one year earlier, according to Statistics Finland.

There were 32,000 more employed men while the number of employed women was nearly the same as in August 2025.

In August, the non-seasonally adjusted employment rate, that is, the proportion of the employed among persons aged 20 to 64, stood at 77.3 per cent, having been 76.2 per cent in this age group one year earlier.

The employment rate of men aged 20 to 64 grew by 1.4 percentage points to 78.6 per cent and the employment rate of women grew by 0.7 percentage points to 75.8 per cent from one year ago.

The employment rate of persons aged 20 to 69 grew by 0.9 percentage points from last year's August to 72.0 per cent.

Meanwhile, the number of unemployed persons aged 15 to 74 was 262,000 (margin of error ±23,000), which was 5,000 fewer than one year earlier. The number of unemployed men was 140,000 and that of unemployed women 122,000.

In August, the non-seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of persons aged 15 to 74, or the proportion of the unemployed among the labour force stood at 9.1 per cent, having been 9.3 per cent one year earlier.

The unemployment rate of men remained at the previous year's level of 9.2 per cent. The unemployment rate of women stood at 8.9 per cent, which was 0.5 percentage points lower than in the previous year.

In August, the share of the unemployed aged 15 to 24 among the labour force stood at 16.9 per cent, which was 0.3 percentage points higher than one year earlier. The trend of the unemployment rate among young people was 22.7 per cent. The share of unemployed young people aged 15 to 24 among the population in the same age group was 8.2 per cent.

There were 1,276,000 persons aged 15 to 74 in the inactive population in August 2026, which was 29,000 fewer than one year earlier. There were 35,000 fewer men and 6,000 more women in the inactive population than one year earlier.
