New car registration increases in May

A total of 19,046 new motor vehicles were registered in May 2021, of which 11,462 were automobiles, according to Statistics Finland.

First registrations increased by 45.2 per cent from the corresponding month of the previous year.

In May the number of new passenger cars registered was 9,964, which was 94.9 per cent up from the year before, but compared to May 2019, passenger car registrations decreased by 8.5 per cent.

The share of new electric passenger cars was 9.7 per cent and plug-in hybrid electric cars 21.7 per cent.

A total of 3 121 new electric and plug-in hybrid electric cars were registered, which was nearly four times more than the year before.

These data are based on the Traffic Affairs Register of the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency (Traficom) and they have been produced by Statistics Finland. The numbers are exclusive of the vehicles on the Åland Islands.

In the January to May period of 2021 a total of 83,904 vehicles were first registered. Compared to the year before, there was an increase of 17.6 per cent.

The number of passenger cars first registered in the January to May period was 46,788, which is 18.9 per cent up from the year before.

The most common passenger car makes first registered in the January to May period were Toyota, Volkswagen and Skoda.
