New car registration drops by 53% in May

A total of 13,115 new motor vehicles were registered in May this year, of which 6,313 were automobiles, according to Statistics Finland.

First registrations decreased by 32.3 per cent year on year.

In May, the number of new private cars registered was 5,110, posting a year-on-year decline of 53.1 per cent. Of them, the share of new diesel-driven private cars was 16.0 per cent.

The numbers, however, are exclusive of the vehicles registered on the Åland Islands.

In the January to May period of 2020, a total of 71,361 vehicles were first registered. Compared to the year before, it marks a decrease of 15.2 per cent. The number of private cars first registered in the January to May period was 39,362, which is 20.9 per cent less than that in the corresponding period of the previous year.

The most common private car makes first registered in the period were Toyota, Skoda and Volkswagen.
