Sea transport increases in January

The goods volume of foreign sea transport in January 2020 was 8.3 million tonnes in total, according to the Statistics Finland.

Sea transport in the month increased by 0.2 million tonnes from that of January last year. Export volume fell by 0.7 per cent year on year, amounting to 4.3 million tonnes. The year-on-year import volume increased by 2.3 per cent in the month to 4.0 million tonnes.

General cargo was transported most, in total 1.3 million tonnes, which is 16 per cent of all transport. The second most transported cargo was crude oil, 1.2 million tonnes, followed by oil products, 0.9 million tonnes.

A total of 1.1 million tonnes of containers were transported through Finnish ports in January last, which is 0.1 tonnes more than that in January 2019. The number of containers transported was 73,145 (128,240 TEU containers). Export of containers in the month went up by 20.4 per cent year on year measured in tonnes and import fell by 8.1 per cent measured in tonnes.

A total of 208,478 transport equipments were transported in foreign sea traffic in January 2020. Most of the transport equipments were passenger cars belonging to passengers. In January, 127, 144 passenger cars were transported. The second most transported goods were trucks, 53,123, followed by truck trailers, 33,620.

A total of 1,049,144 persons were transported in passenger traffic in January 2020. In all, 557,723 persons travelled between Finland and Estonia and 483,511 persons between Finland and Sweden. Altogether, 7,910 passengers were transported between Finland and Germany. The number of passengers in the month grew by 16 per cent from that in January 2019. The number of passengers between Finland and Estonia in the month increased by 79,528 and between Finland and Sweden by 70,245 year on year. In January 2020, no passengers of foreign cruise ships arrived in Finland.

The Saimaa Canal was open in January 2020. No transport was registered through the canal in foreign traffic.
