Libyan navy on Sunday rescued 116 illegal immigrants on a rubber boat off the coast of the western city of Zuwara, some 120 km west of the capital Tripoli.

"Coast guards patrol of Tripoli managed to rescue 116 illegal immigrants from eight different African nationalities, including five women, on a rubber boat," the navy said in a statement.

The rescued immigrants were taken to Tajura reception center near Tripoli, the navy said.

Due to the state of insecurity and chaos since the 2011 uprising that toppled former leader Gaddafi's regime, Libya became a preferred point of departure for illegal immigrants wanting to cross the Mediterranean towards Europe.

Improved weather conditions increase the flows of migrants from Libya, particularly off the country's western coast.
