WC winning goalkeeper Lloris banned, fined for drunk driving

Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris has been fined 50,000 pounds and banned from driving for 20 months after pleading to driving while under the influence of alcohol.

Lloris, who also captained the national team in this summer's World Cup final, appeared at Westminster Magistrates Court, where it was explained he had been stopped by police in the early hours of August 24 with 80 micrograms of alcohol per 100 milliliters of breath, when the legal limit in England is 35 micrograms.

Prosecutors explained he had been seen driving erratically and had veered "towards a parked vehicle" and that after being stopped by the police, he had needed help to get out of his car.

The Magistrate who sentenced the 31-year-old said that not only had he put his own life at risk, but "that of your passenger".

"It was pure luck that you did not cause damage to other vehicles or pedestrians in the central London area."

Lloris' defense explained he had been eating in a restaurant and that he had been invited to several drinks following France's World Cup success in a month prior to the incident.
