Finland to face Sweden in quarter-finals in Ice Hockey WC

Last match defeat makes Finland runner-up in G-A

The last group match defeat to Germany snatched to top position from Finns in the Group A in the Ice Hockey World Championship as a result the Lions will face a tougher opponent Sweden in the quarter-finals scheduled to be held on Thursday night.

Germany beat Finland by 4 goals to 2 in their last group match at Steel Arena in Slovakia and secured third place ahead of USA in the group A. Canada topped in the group while Finland secured second position.

Although the fovourite Finns took lead of the match twice but the extra-ordinary performance by the Germans forced the Finns to concede the defeat.

Harri Pesonen of Finland scored the first goal in the match at the 15th minute and took the team 1-0 lead but Marc Michaelis leveled the score immediately just after two minutes. Although Juhani Tyrvainen scored second goal for the Finns at 24th minute Dominik , Kahun leveled the score again at the 33rd minute.

Leon Draisaitl scored goal 44th minute of the match and took lead for Germany first time which made the Finns to play very much attacking game. At certain stage the started to play keeping the net empty to at least draw the match but it brought another opportunity for the Germans when Leon Draisaitl scored a goal at the last minute of the match.

The quarter-finals will be held on Thursday where Finland will face Sweden, Canada will face Switzerland, Russia will face USA and Czech Republic will face Germany.
