The police held 134 motorists suspected of drunk driving during the intensified nationwide pre-Christmas traffic surveillance carried out last weekend.

A total of 24 wanted persons were also apprehended during the surveillance, said the National Police Board in a press release on Tuesday.

The police breathalysed a total of 33,156 drivers. The number of drivers caught drunk driving was at the same level as was found during the corresponding surveillance exercise last year.

Breathalyser patrols in particular targeted evening and night-time pre-Christmas party traffic.

“Through such surveillance and the related communications, the police aim to prevent serious drunk driving accidents,” said National Police Board Chief Superintendent Timo Ajaste.

The current enhanced surveillance will continue countrywide during the forthcoming weekend, too.
