2 Cops commit suicide at President´s residence, NBI Office

Two high ranking security police officers allegedly committed suicide at the temporary official residence of President Alexander Stubb in Helsinki in November and at the office of the National Police Board (NBI) in Espoo this month, reported commercial broadcaster MTV on Friday.

The first incident took place on November 3, 2024 at President´s residence in Munkkiniemi, Helsinki when a high ranking on-duty security officer shot himself with a shotgun.

The body of the deceased was later recovered by other security guards from the basement of the building.

The President was informed about the incident immediately and he discussed the incident with the staff of the Presidential Palace at the beginning of the following week.

Eastern Uusimaa Police investigated into the incident and found that the incident was not related to the person's work duties at the Helsinki Police Department.

Police also did not find any crime link to the incident, said police in a press release.

The second incident took place at the office of the National Police Board in Otaniemi, Espoo on February 4 when another high-ranking police officer shot himself with his service weapon at the workplace.

Police are investigating into the case of the death of a police officer at the National Police Board premise, said police in a press release on Friday.

The police were informed about the incident in the morning at about 7:30.

According to the preliminary information, the incident that led to the death had already occurred earlier, said Detective Inspector Jyrki Kallio, who is leading the investigation.

Terming the investigation into the cause of death as confidential matter, police will not provide further details in this regard, the press release added.

At least four police officers allegedly committed suicide in 2024, said the MTV report.
