Birth rate in Finland rises slightly

Finland’s population stood at 5,526,774 at the end of February, according to the Statistics Finland.

The number of births was 1,501 lower than that of deaths.

The country’s population, however, increased by 1,482 persons during January-February.

The reason for the increase was migration gain from abroad, since immigration exceeded emigration by 2,833.

During January-February, 7,510 children were born, or 355 more than in the corresponding period of 2019. The number of deaths was 9,011 or 508 less than that one year earlier.

According to the preliminary statistics for February, 4,917 persons immigrated to Finland from abroad in January-February and 2,084 persons emigrated from Finland.

The number of immigrants was 146 lower and the number of emigrants 221 lower than in the corresponding period of the previous year. In all, 1,160 of the immigrants and 1,383 of the emigrants were Finnish citizens.
