The National Police Board (NPB) has started an investigation into the police action on the demonstration of Elokapina, the Finnish unit of the environmental group Extinction Rebellion held outside Government Palace on October 8.

Police arrested 52 activists of the Elokapina protest movement.

Both the demonstration and the police operation attracted plenty of media attention, said the NPB in a press release, adding that the National Police Board has followed the discussion about the matter and on its own initiative has decided to take it up as an internal oversight legality safeguards matter.

A request for information about the matter has been sent to Helsinki Police Department.

Once Helsinki Police Department has provided the information requested in due course, NPB will assess the information and provide a written decision on the matter, the press release added.
