African leaders meet on DRC post-election in Ethiopia's capital

A high-level consultation meeting of African leaders is deliberating Thursday on ways of resolution to the post-election issue in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) at the AU headquarters in Ethiopia's capital Addis Ababa.

Chaired by the Rwandan President and current chair of AU, Paul Kagame, the meeting dubbed is being attended among others by Ethiopia's Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, and Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni.

Preceded by the meeting of the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) at the same venue Thursday, the high-level consultation meeting was convened for deliberation on the post-election situation in the DRC.

In his opening remarks, Kagame commended SADC leaders for their efforts in dealing with the post-election disputes in the DRC, and reiterated the need that Africans meet together to seek solutions for their own problems.

Speaking on his part, Moussa Faki Mahamat, Chairperson of the AU Commission, reiterated concern over the situation on the ground, and noted that the meeting is a gesture of solidarity with DRC.

The Chairperson reiterated that the pan-African bloc was actively involved in the election, and that it made statement urging all concerned stakeholders in the DRC to act in a manner that consolidates democracy and to preserve peace following the release of interim results of the presidential election.
