Trump's planned visit to Ireland cancelled

The planned visit by the U.S. President Donald Trump to Ireland in November has been cancelled, reported local media quoting official sources on Tuesday.

Irish semi-state TV channel RTE said that the White House has confirmed to the Irish ambassador to the United States earlier in the day that Trump's visit is off "for scheduling reasons".

Late last month, the White House announced that Trump will visit Ireland while on his way to or from France to attend a commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the World War I Armistice to be held in Paris on November 11.

Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar has confirmed the visit though he said the trip "came a little bit out of the blue".

Following the government's confirmation of Trump's visit to Ireland, several opposition parties in the country, including Labour Party, Green Party and Solidarity-People Before Profit, called for protests to be launched during Trump's visit in Ireland.

The report quoted sources from the PM Office and the Foreign Ministry as saying that the cancellation of Trump's visit came as a considerable surprise for Varadkar and the Irish government.
