1 killed, 10 kidnapped after gunmen attack on Nigerian institute

At least one student was killed and another one was injured while 10 others including teachers were kidnapped after unidentified gunmen attacked on Thursday an institute in northwest Nigeria's Kaduna state, a state official said on Friday, reported Xinhua.

Samuel Aruwan, the commissioner for internal security and home affairs in the state, said in a statement that the state government has been briefed by security agencies of a gunmen attack on the Nuhu Bamalli Polytechnic at the town of Zaria on Thursday night.

Aruwan said the gunmen invaded the staff quarters of the campus, shooting sporadically.

"In the process, two students were hit and sustained gunshot injuries," he said, adding one of the students died after they were rushed to a local hospital for medical attention, while the other one is still receiving treatment.

The spokesperson said two lecturers and about eight students were abducted from the institution during the attack.

He said security agencies are conducting security assessments and interfacing with the management and students of the institution.

The most populous African country has witnessed a series of gunmen attacks on schools and universities in recent months, leading to hundreds of students kidnapped.
