At least 16 persons, mostly children, were killed as flash flood washed away several houses in Kozkunar district of Afghanistan's eastern Nangarhar province late Friday night, provincial government spokesman Attaullah Khogiani said Saturday.

Heavy rains followed by flash flood washed away several houses in Qalatak village of Kozkunar district, killing 16 people including a woman and some 12 children, the official said.

Four other children went missing due to flooding, said the official.

Rescue operations are underway to find the missing persons and provide humanitarian assistance to the affected families, Khogiani said.
