Motorists need to replace summer tyres by winter tyres of their vehicles by next week as the deadline to switch to winter tyres expires at the end of November.

According to Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom, setting of winter tyres is mandatory on the vehicle from beginning of December to end of February.

The motorists can use winter tyres earlier as per the necessity and already started to use at the Northern parts of the country.

This rule also applies to cars and vans registered abroad when they are driven in Finland.

Before fitting tyres, it should be ensured that they are in good condition and compatible with the vehicle and that the tyre pressure is correct.

The groove depth of winter tyres must be at least 3.0 millimetres measured in the principle grooves of the tyre pattern.

Although winter tyres are compulsory until the end of February and may be used until 20 April.

Meanwhile, from June 1, 2020 law will allow motorists to use summer tyres during winter, if weather permits.

On the other hand, if wintry road conditions occur outside of the traditional season, drivers will have to swap their cars’ summer tyres for winter versions – and this will apply from November until the end of March, reported national broadcaster Yle.
