A number of long-distance trains were delayed by 20 to 60 minutes on Wednesday due to technical faults and harsh weather, reported the local media.

The communication department of national railway operator VR Group said trains in the eastern part of the country were delayed due to a fault in the railway system in the Lahti-Lappeenranta section.

The fault was repaired but delays were still expected, said VR.

Trains plying the Oulu-Helsinki and Helsinki-Vaasa routes were also hampered by technical faults which delayed the trains for about 50 minutes.

VR said heavy snowfall slowed down trains in eastern and northern parts of the country.
