The return traffic congestion following the Midsummer holiday was at its peak on Sunday afternoon, reported Finnish language daily Savon Sanomat.

Erno Hakanen from the road traffic management centre said that traffic congestion started at around 1 pm.

"The number of vehicles started to increase from the morning, however, so far the speeds have been good," said Hakanen.

The worst congestion in the early afternoon hours was near Lahti along national road heading south.

According to national broadcaster Yle, the traffic in the south of Finland will continue to be lively until 8-10 pm with speed falling to 20-50 kilometres per hour.
