The Royal Blues have relieved head coach David Wagner from his duties with immediate effect, the Bundesliga outfit confirmed in an official statement on Sunday, reported Xinhua.

Saturday's 3-1 loss to Werder Bremen extended Schalke's winless run to 18 matches and proved to be the end of Wagner's spell with the "Knappen".

"We all hoped we would be able to turn things around with David Wagner but the first two game of the season did not deliver the necessary results," Schalke sporting director Jochen Schneider said

After last horror season, Schalke hoped for a better start into the campaign but the crushing 8-0 defeat to Bayern at the season opener and uninspired performance against Bremen gave no room for hope.

"We have therefore decided to take the path of a new start in terms of personnel. Despite the disappointing results, this decision was anything but easy for us," said Schneider.

The 48-year-old coach joined Schalke in summer 2019 after signing a contract stipulated until June 2022. In 40 games as Schalke coach, Wagner reaped 12 wins, 12 draws and suffered 16 defeats.

Wagner's last win with Schalke dates back from February 4 when the "Royal Blues" edged Hertha Berlin 3-2 in the German Cup's last 16.

Schalke sits currently on the last place of the table with zero points and -10 goal difference following the second round in Bundesliga

The "Royal Blues" will announce Wagner's successor in the coming days for now before they clash with second-placed Leipzig at the third round in Bundesliga on Saturday.
