Football great Diego Maradona could quit as head coach of Gimnasia La Plata, less than three months after taking charge of the Argentine side, according to widespread local media reports.

The 59-year-old is said to be considering his future after club president Gabriel Pellegrino announced he would not run for another term in an election on Saturday.

"Diego has said: 'I came with you and I will go with you,' so he will surely leave Gimnasia," Gimnasia official Rocio Oliva told Fox Sports on Monday.

Argentine television channel TNT Sports also reported that Maradona had told club officials he would step down if Pellegrino departs.

Maradona, who led Argentina to the 1986 World Cup title, took charge of Gimnasia in September after agreeing to a contract that runs until the end of May.

Gimnasia are currently 22nd in the 24-team Argentine Superliga standings with 10 points from 13 matches. Their hopes of avoiding relegation have been boosted by three wins in their past five outings.
