The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) suspects a youth, now dead, for creating widespread service disruptions in a number of government websites at the end of this September, said the NBI in a press release on Tuesday.

The NBI, however, said the youth, aged about 20, is now dead, adding that he single-handedly launched the distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack on the websites, such as Suomi.fi.

The police, however, did not say anything about the cause of his death.

The DDoS attack shut or slowed down the websites of the police, tax administration, Finnish Transport Safety Agency (Trafi), and Social Insurance Institution (Kela), among other government agencies.

“The preliminary investigation into the crime is under way and it will take a few more months [to complete], as we are still finding possible links to the previous denial of service attacks,” said NBI Detective Inspector Marko Leponen.

The police said they will not forward the case to the persecutor at the moment as the suspect is not alive anymore.
