Kokoomus sweeps in municipal polls

The opposition Kansallinen Kokoomus (National Coalition Party-NCP) bagged highest number of votes in the municipal elections held across the country on Sunday.

The ruling Suomen Sosialidemokraattinen Puolue (Social Democratic Party of Finland-SDP) secured second place in the elections followed by another component of the ruling alliance Suomen Keskusta (Centre Party of Finland) and main opposition Perussuomalaiset (Finns Party).

Kokoomus got a total of 5,12,123 votes (21.2%), which was 0.5 percent higher than the previous local government elections in 2017.

SDP got total 4,28, 320 votes (17.8%), Keskusta 3, 62, 199 votes (15%), Perussuomalaiset 3, 50, 616 votes (14.5%) and another component of the five-party alliance government Vihreä Liitto (Green League) got 2, 53, 310 votes (10.5%).

The votes of SDP was 1.6 percent lower, Keskusta was 2.5 percent lower, Vihreät was 2 percent lower while Perussuomalaiset was 5.7 percent higher than the previous municipal elections.

Two other ruling parties- Vasemmistoliitto (Left Alliance) and the Suomenruotsalainenkansanpuolue (Swedish People’s Party of Finland-RKP) bagged 1, 92, 442 votes (8%) and 1, 18, 993 (4.9%) respectively. Although the votes of Vasemmistoliitto reduced by 0.8 percent from the last elections, RKP´s votes ration remained unchanged.

The opposition Suomen Kristillisdemokraati (Christian Democratic Party) got 87, 005 votes (3.6%), 0.5 percent lower than previous polls and Liike Nyt (Movement Now) 38, 033 votes (1.6%), 1.6 percent higher than the previous polls.

The Crystal Party got 6285 votes, The Feminist Party 3946 votes, The Pirate Party of Finland 2542 votes, The Communist Party of Finland 2047 votes, Animal Justice Party of Finland 1726 and The Blue Reform 1180 votes.

While the rest votes went to the small parties and groups.

A total of 24, 56, 146 votes out of 4 4, 60, 299 were cast in the elections and the turnout was 55.1 percent.
