The police arrested 94 drivers on charge of suspected driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs during the weekend as a part of its countrywide intensified breathalyser testing, said an official press release.
Out of the suspects, alcohol was the cause of intoxication in 63 cases while drugs in 31 cases.
Persons suspected of other crimes as well as 41 wanted persons were also caught during the weekend drive.
A total of 5,824 drivers came under breath alcohol test.
“The police carry out control operations and inform the public of them in order to prevent serious accidents that result from drunk driving,” said National Police Board Chief Superintendent Timo Ajaste.
Intensified drive will continue next weekend throughout the country, added the press release.
Between January and August this year, a total of 384 people have been killed or injured in drunk-driving accidents. This figure is 8.5 per cent higher than that in the corresponding period of last year.
