SDP remains most popular party: poll

The Suomen Sosialidemokraattinen Puolue (Social Democratic Party of Finland-SDP), which leads the five-party ruling coalition remains the most popular party in the country, according to the results of the latest monthly poll commissioned by the national broadcaster Yle released on Thursday.
The main opposition party Perussuomalaiset (Finns Party) remains second on the popularity list with 18.1 per cent support, followed by another opposition party, the Kansallinen Kokoomus (National Coalition Party-NCP) with 17.9 per cent support.
The support for the Perussuomalaiset remains unchanged from the previous month while the support for the Kokoomus inched up slightly by 0.4%.
The support for the Suomen Keskusta (Centre Party of Finland), the second largest component of the government, gained 0.7% month on month to 11.4 per cent, while the support for another component of the government, the Vihreä Liitto (Green League), declined by 1.0 per cent to 10.9 per cent from the previous month.
The popularity of the rest two allies of the government – the Vasemmistoliitto (Left Alliance) and the Suomenruotsalainenkansanpuolue (Swedish People’s Party of Finland-RKP) – also increased to 8.7% and 4.3% respectively.
The support for the Vasemmistoliitto increased by 0.9% month on month, while the support for the RKP increased by 0.4%.
Markku Jokisipila, director of the Centre for Parliamentary Studies at the University of Turku, commenting on the poll results, said after the coronavirus situation, the cabinet must be able to overhaul the government programme, and both the Vihreä Liitto and the Keskusta have a need to raise their profile in the wake of the poll results.
The poll, carried out for Yle by Taloustutkimus, a market research company, throughout June, covered 2,450 respondents.
