Helsinki Mayor Jan Vapaavuori on Thursday decided that the facade of the Finlandia Hall will be illuminated with blue lighting every evening from April 4.

The gesture is meant to honour the workers in the healthcare industry and other sectors who are providing vital services during the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, said a press release.

The lighting will begin each day at dusk and continue each night until further notice.

“The gesture is intended to show our gratitude to all of those who are doing invaluable work under these difficult circumstances. At the same time, we want to encourage city residents to persevere during this trying time,” said Vapaavuori.

Colourful illumination of famous landmarks has become a familiar phenomenon around the world. The City of Helsinki decided in 2018 that it would start illuminating the iconic Finlandia Hall to mark special occasions.
