Birth rate remains low in country in Jan-Feb

A total of 7,135 children were born in the country in January and February this year, which is 571 fewer than in the corresponding period in 2018, according to Statistics Finland.

The number of deaths was 9,240, which is 312 lower than one year earlier.

However, the number of births was 2,105 lower than that of deaths.

According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, Finland's population was 5,522,018 at the end of February.

Country's population increased by 245 persons during January-February. The reason for the increase was migration gain from abroad, since immigration exceeded emigration by 2,438.

According to the preliminary statistics for February, 4,570 persons immigrated to Finland from abroad and 2,132 persons emigrated from Finland. The number of immigrants was 273 lower and the number of emigrants 550 lower than in the corresponding period of the previous year. In all, 1,106 of the immigrants and 1,448 of the emigrants were Finnish citizens.
