Birth rate remains low in Finland in January

A total of 4,047 children were born in the country in January this year and the number is 99 fewer than in the corresponding period in 2017, according to Statistics Finland.

Meanwhile, a total of 4,679 people died in January, which is 850 lower than one year earlier.

The number of births was 632 lower than that of deaths.

The Statistics Finland's preliminary data said, Finland's population was 5,516,812 at the end of January.

The total number of population, however, increased by 588 persons during January due to the increase of migration from abroad, since immigration exceeded emigration by 1,220.

According to the preliminary statistics for January, 2,569 persons immigrated to Finland from abroad and 1,349 persons emigrated from Finland.

The number of immigrants was 53 lower and the number of emigrants 26 higher than in the corresponding period of the previous year. In all, 57 of the immigrants and 935 of the emigrants were Finnish citizens.
