Country´s population stands at 5,516,224

Finland's population was 5,516,224 at the end of the year 2017, according to Statistics Finland's preliminary data.

The population grew by 12,927 persons, which is 3,062 persons fewer than in 2016.

According to preliminary data by region, in 2017 the population grew only in Uusimaa, Pirkanmaa, Varsinais-Suomi, North Ostrobothnia and Åland.

The population grew in absolute numbers most in Uusimaa. The second highest increase in population was seen in Pirkanmaa.

Relative to the population, the population increase was biggest in Uusimaa, 11.8 per mil and Åland, 9.8 per mil.

The relative population growth was third largest in Pirkanmaa, 5.6 per mil. In absolute numbers, the population loss was biggest in Kymenlaakso, which lost 2,033 persons of its population.

In 2017, the biggest population loss in relative terms was recorded in Etelä-Savo, the loss being 11.5 per mil.
