Birth rate stays lower than death rate in Feb

A total of 7,842 children were born in the country during the January-February period while the number of total deaths was 9,276, according to Statistics Finland.

The number of births in the period was 1,434 lower than that of deaths.

However, the birth and death number was 302 in total, which is 67 higher than that in the January-February period in 2020.

According to Statistics Finland’s preliminary data, Finland’s population was 5,538,350 at the end of February.

The country’s population increased by 2,204 persons over the period due to migration gain from abroad, since immigration exceeded emigration by 3,174.

A total of 4,619 persons immigrated to Finland from abroad and 1,445 persons emigrated from Finland.

The number of immigrants was 992 lower and the number of emigrants 776 lower than that in the corresponding period of the previous year. In all, 1,142 of the immigrants and 982 of the emigrants were Finnish citizens.
