EU infectious diseases experts on Monday assessed the coronavirus situation, which suggests COVID-19 cases can spread rapidly to new areas, said the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) in a press release.

According to the assessment, the situation in European countries has changed over the last few days with the first more extensive clusters and local infection chains being identified in Italy.

“The situation shows that COVID-19 cases can spread rapidly to new areas. There is a need for continuous vigilance and for preparatory measures for social welfare and healthcare. It is important to consider together which measures are effective,” said THL Director Mika Salminen.

THL is monitoring and assessing the situation together with the European Centre for Disease Prevention (ECDC) and the World Health Organisation (WHO).

THL will provide information and instructions, as the situation develops.
