Storm Gloria kills 4, causes severe damage across Spain

At least four people died and several dozens were injured from Storm Gloria's sweep across Spain, according to the country's civil defense authorities.

The storm has brought torrential rains, high winds and heavy snowfall to 29 provinces, which remain on weather warnings. Barcelona and Girona, in Spain's northwestern region of Catalonia, are on red alert on Tuesday.

The victims include a 63- man hit by a roof tile in the central province of Avila; a 54-year-old homeless man near Valencia; a man killed in a road accident due to snow in the Asturias region; and another man found outside his home in Valencia dead of hypothermia.

In Girona, a state of emergency has been declared due to the risk of the Onyar River overflowing its banks. The famous beaches near Barcelona are seeing record waves of more than eight metres, according to eyewitnesses.

Classes have been suspended in schools, affecting some 55,500 Catalan students, according to the Spanish Department of Education.

According to the authorities, Catalonia's ports have suspended operations and access on "precaution."

Catalonia's regional government has ordered a ban on all outdoor activities in Girona, Barcelona and other regions, according to its interior department.
