The Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) said Tuesday it detained jointly with police two leaders and seven members of the banned Hizb ut-Tahrir organization in Moscow and the Ural city of Chelyabinsk.
The detainees followed the instructions of foreign Hizb ut-Tahrir emissaries to spread the ideology of the terrorist organization in Russia in a bid to overthrow the government by force, it said in a statement.
They also recruited local Muslims and migrant laborers in Russia, the statement said, adding that propaganda materials used in carrying out terrorist activities were discovered on and seized from the detainees.
Hizb ut-Tahrir, an extremist organization which seeks to re-establish the Islamic Caliphate to create an Islamic "superstate", is banned in Russia and Central Asia.
On Nov. 22, the FSB said it had detained nine Hizb ut-Tahrir members in Moscow, the Republic of Tatarstan and the Tyumen region.
