Vilnius University (VU) will shut down for two days, demanding wage increase from the government, local media reported on Tuesday.

VU spokesman Ervinas Spudys confirmed that the university decided to suspend its activities on Thursday and Friday in protest over the failure by the government to deliver on its promises to raise wages of academic and non-academic employees, news agency Elta reported.

According to Elta, the university may decide to suspend its activities for a longer period of time if its position is not taken into account.

During the suspension, lectures, seminars and planned events will be cancelled, directly affecting 35,000 people.

Vilnius University is one of the oldest universities in the Baltic states and the largest in Lithuania.
