The Ministry of Education and Culture has agreed with a ministerial committee proposal to ease the admission process at the higher educational institutes of the country.

The committee on Friday submitted its report to the Education and Culture Minister Sanni Grahn-Laasonen.

The report recommended that institutions of higher education could choose the majority of stu-dents on the basis of secondary school diplomas.

According to the committee’s assessment, a high school diploma is the best starting point for equality and accessibility regarding admissions to higher education.

The universities’ authorities should ease the admission tests by the year 2018.

The committee also suggested the ministry to make specific proposal with the view to hold the matriculation examinations in a better way.

“Changes in admission test process at the universities have been discussed in the country for about a decade. Compared to other countries we have a heavy and complicated system.

The cur-rent model is becoming a burden, increasing unnecessary skipped years and guides the youth to take expensive preparation courses that everyone can't afford. There is a need for change,” said Sanni Grahn-Laasonen.
