Jari Niemelä appointed Helsinki University Rector

The Board of the University of Helsinki on Wednesday has selected professor Jari Niemelä, Doctor of Philosophy, to the position of rector of the University of Helsinki for a five-year term from 2018 to 2023.

The rectorship of Niemelä, who is 60, starts on August 1, 2018, said a press release.

Currently Niemelä is a director of the Helsinki Institute of Sustainability Science HELSUS. He is professor of urban ecology and served as dean of the Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences, University of Helsinki from 2004 to 2017.

Earlier, the University authority in Mid April short-listed Liisa Laakso, Jari Niemelä, and Outi Vaarala as the possible candidates for the post.
