Admissions to the University of Helsinki’s undergraduate programmes and Finnish- and Swedish-language graduate programmes began on Wednesday under the joint application procedure for higher education.

The application period ends on March 28, said a press release.

The University of Helsinki completed a major degree reform in 2017. The contents of the degree programmes were updated and most degrees were made multidisciplinary.

The release said prospective students apply to broad bachelor’s programmes instead of individual major subjects. In fact, major and minor subjects no longer exist.

The university offers 35 undergraduate and 60 graduate degrees.

Thanks to the degree reform, students now need not commit to a single field of science at the bachelor’s stage, and are free to choose their area of specialisation later, as their studies progress.

It is possible to apply to an increasingly wide variety of master’s programmes after attaining a bachelor’s degree. This enables personalised study paths, said the university’s press release.

The application period for international master’s programmes ended on January 12.
