Helsinki University ranks 90th in best varsities list

The University of Helsinki ranked 90^th in the list of top universities in the world, according to the international Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

The Times ranking makes a balanced comparison between teaching, research and research citations, said a press release, adding that it also considers universities’ international outlooks and interaction with the business sector.

From last year’s ranking, the University of Helsinki has improved particularly in research citations and teaching.

“The international citations for the University of Helsinki’s researchers prove that we do top-level, reliable research. Our constant efforts to further improve our teaching have also borne fruit. We hope that our education reform will further boost the quality of teaching at our university,” said Jukka Kola, Rector of the University of Helsinki in a statement.

In addition to the University of Helsinki, three other Finnish universities improved their ranking from the previous year: Aalto University rose to 190, while the University of Tampere was ranked in the 201–250 range and the University of Eastern Finland in the 301–350 range.

The University of Helsinki is the third- highest Nordic university on the list. It is preceded by two Swedish universities, the Karolinska Institutet (38), which specialises in medicine, and the University of Uppsala (86).

The English universities of Oxford (1) and Cambridge (2) topped this year’s ranking. Asian universities are experiencing a rising trend, with three Asian universities ranking among the top 30. The University of Helsinki’s strategic partner, Peking University, was listed 27th.

The University of Helsinki has consolidated its position among the 100 best research universities in the world. In the Shanghai university ranking, published in August, the University of Helsinki placed 56th for the second year in succession.
