More goods transported by lorries in Q3

A total of 80 million tonnes of goods were transported by lorries in the third quarter of 2017, which was 17 per cent more than in the corresponding quarter in 2016, according to Statistics Finland.

The volume of transported soil materials increased by 19 per cent and the volume of transport for other goods grew by 16 per cent compared to the corresponding quarter of the year before.

The total transport volume of lorries amounted to 7.0 billion tonne-kilometres in the third quarter of 2017, which was seven per cent more than in the corresponding quarter of one year before.

Ninety-three per cent of the transport volume was transported in professional transport and seven per cent in private transport.

The data for the statistics on goods transport by road are collected from lorry owners with a quarterly sample survey.

Transported volume of goods refers to the weight of goods loaded on lorries in tonnes. Tonne-kilometre describes the volume of transport and is obtained as a product of transported volume of goods and length of transport journey.
