A ban on overtime imposed by the Paper Workers’ Union has resulted in a shutdown of a paper machine at UPM’s Tervasaari mill, said the biofore company in a press release.

According to UPM, the machine which produces specialty papers is facing a huge backlog.

Petri Hakanen, the manager of the company’s specialty paper business unit, termed the union’s decision extremely short-sighted. He said, “It is clear that the Paper Workers’ Union’s decision does not improve the local agreement conditions and the position of Tervasaari in competing for development projects.”

The forest industry and the Paper Workers’ Union will continue negotiations on Monday.
