Telecommunications conglomerate Nokia is concentrating its 5G product development to Finland, while development also continues abroad, Tommi Uitto, the director of the company's networks unit, told a Finnish language newspaper Helsingin Sanomat.

"Since I took over the mobile networks unit late last year, we have accelerated recruitment in Finland," Uitto said.

According to the newspaper, Nokia has recently hired 350 new developers in Finland. Uitto said they are based in Oulu, northern Finland, and also in Tampere, southern Finland and Espoo, which is near Helsinki.

According to Uitto, the development and programming work can be widened in Finland "because newly graduated engineers are available, and experienced developers are also available due to downsizing at Nokia mobile phones, Renesas and Synopsys in Finland."

Alongside its new focus on Finland, Nokia continues 5G product development in the U.S., Poland, France, India and China, Helsingin Sanomat said.

Nokia CEO Rajeev Suri told the newspaper that "about a year ago" he had changed the management of the mobile networks sector. "With that I wanted to ensure that we have a real grasp of how we progress with 5G, and now we have that."
